Easy rooms first so you build the habit; sentimental items last. That order shows up in nearly every downsizing guide for a reason.
The rules that make downsizing stick
- One room at a time, finished. Half-done rooms everywhere is how people give up.
- Decide once. Every item gets keep, sell, donate or toss. No "maybe" pile; that's just a storage unit in your living room.
- Sell big things, donate the rest. Selling a $15 mug takes more time than it's worth.
- Scan paper and photos before you shred or box them.
- Measure the new place first if you're moving smaller. Furniture that doesn't fit is the most expensive thing you'll move.
